Why we recommend XWERKS Grow for HYROX
Grow suits athletes who want a dedicated whey isolate they can fit around their meals and training. Its protein source is New Zealand grass-fed whey isolate, rather than a blend of isolate and concentrate. That gives you a straightforward starting point when comparing labels.
- Protein you can count: Grow provides 25g per serving in most flavors. Peanut Butter provides 23g, so use the label for your selected flavor when planning your intake.
- Thirty servings per bag: at the current $69 one-time price, that works out to $2.30 per labeled serving before shipping and tax. Prices and offers can change.
- A separate protein component: choose the rest of your meal around the workout. Pair a shake with carbohydrate-rich food when you need a fuller post-training snack.
- More than one way to use it: keep a serving for a shake after training, or incorporate it into breakfast when that is the meal where protein tends to be missing.
Grow's tradeoffs are clear: it costs more than many concentrate options, it is not vegan, and it contains milk. Lower lactose does not mean safe for a milk allergy or guaranteed comfortable digestion. Review the current Grow label, flavors and ingredients before choosing.
For a busy training week, the practical benefit is convenience: a measured protein serving you can keep ready for breakfast, the gym or travel. Choose the option that makes your normal eating plan easier to follow.
Whey isolate, concentrate or plant protein: which fits HYROX?
Choose by dietary fit and practical use, rather than assuming every HYROX athlete needs the same powder. The Australian Institute of Sport notes that practical differences among whey forms are small; isolate generally costs more and contains less carbohydrate and fat. See the AIS protein supplement guide.
| Type | Best fit | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Whey isolate | Dairy-tolerant athletes wanting a concentrated protein serving | Usually costs more; still a milk protein |
| Whey concentrate | Budget-focused athletes who tolerate it | Typically more lactose, carbohydrate and fat |
| Soy or a plant protein blend | Vegan athletes or people avoiding dairy | Check protein dose, amino acid profile and allergens |
| Casein | People who prefer a slower-digesting dairy protein | Contains milk; not a necessary extra purchase |
| Carbohydrate-plus-protein mix | Convenience when both nutrients are wanted | Less freedom to adjust each component separately |

How much protein do HYROX athletes need?
Start with total daily protein from food and shakes combined. The International Society of Sports Nutrition recommends approximately 1.4–2.0g per kilogram of body weight per day for most exercising people. This is general sports-nutrition guidance, not a HYROX-specific prescription. Read the ISSN position stand.
For illustration, multiplying body weight by that range gives:
| Body weight | Daily protein range |
|---|---|
| 60kg / about 132lb | 84–120g |
| 70kg / about 154lb | 98–140g |
| 80kg / about 176lb | 112–160g |
| 90kg / about 198lb | 126–180g |
Use the gap, not a fixed scoop rule. Suppose an 80kg athlete chooses a 128g daily target: 80 × 1.6 = 128. If meals provide 103g, a serving with 25g brings the total to 128g. If meals already provide that amount, an extra shake is optional. This is a worked example, not an individualized meal plan.
Count the protein in your mixing liquid and other foods too. A powder's scoop weight is not the same as its protein content. The Nutrition Facts panel gives the number to use.
When should you take protein around HYROX training?
Choose a repeatable time that helps you meet your needs; a rigid 30-minute deadline is unnecessary. The ISSN describes benefits from protein before or after training and an exercise-related anabolic response lasting at least 24 hours. Its general per-feeding guidance is 20–40g of high-quality protein, spread across the day. Source: ISSN protein and exercise position stand.
- Morning session, then work: pack breakfast or a familiar shake before leaving home so the post-gym commute does not decide what you eat.
- Evening session, dinner soon afterward: look at the meal you already planned before automatically adding another serving.
- Race travel: decide where your normal meals will come from and pack a familiar option if food access will be awkward.
Test the serving size, flavor and mixing liquid during training. Race morning is a poor time to discover whether a new combination agrees with you. For the wider training picture, see our HYROX preparation workouts.
Keep carbohydrates in the recovery plan
A low-carbohydrate protein powder is not a complete HYROX fueling plan. The ISSN emphasizes adequate carbohydrate intake for endurance performance. Protein supports a different part of the nutrition plan. Source: ISSN.
Picture the end of a hard session: you have a shaker, a journey home and another workout to plan for. Decide what the shake accompanies. Fruit and a bagel, a bowl of oats, or a normal meal can make more sense than treating a protein scoop as the entire recovery strategy. Choose portions to match your day and established eating plan.

Five checks before buying a protein powder for HYROX
- Read the exact flavor label. Compare protein grams, serving size and allergens. Do not assume every flavor has identical nutrition.
- Identify the job. Are you filling a daily protein gap, making breakfast easier or packing a travel option? Buy for the problem you actually have.
- Calculate the useful cost. Divide the purchase price by labeled servings. Compare the same purchase type, and check renewal terms separately if subscribing.
- Review testing details. Look for what was tested and whether the report applies to the product or batch. A general “tested” claim does not tell you the scope.
- Choose something you will use. Your preferred flavor, storage space and normal mixing method matter more than accumulating tubs that do not fit your routine.
Common questions about protein powder for HYROX
Do I need a protein powder made specifically for HYROX?
No special sport label is required to follow the selection criteria above. Look at the actual protein source, serving and dietary fit. Grow is our recommendation for athletes who want whey isolate; a dairy-free option or a lower-cost concentrate may suit someone else better.
Is whey isolate lactose-free?
Do not assume every isolate is completely lactose-free. Check the specific product information and your own tolerance. Grow is described as very low in lactose, but it still contains milk protein and is unsuitable for a milk allergy.
Should I take a protein shake on rest days?
Use the same question you ask on training days: does your food intake leave a gap? A rest day does not automatically require a shake, and a workout does not automatically require two. Fit the powder to your overall plan.
Sources and selection method
We compared protein categories by dietary suitability, serving practicality, price basis and fit with a HYROX training routine. The nutrition guidance comes from the ISSN's 2017 protein and exercise position stand and the Australian Institute of Sport's protein supplement guidance. Grow details come from the current product listing. These sources do not establish that Grow outperforms another protein in a HYROX race.
