100% Isolate vs. Protein Blend
Xwerks Grow contains one type of protein: whey protein isolate. That's it. ON Gold Standard uses a blend of isolate, concentrate, and peptides — and doesn't disclose how much of each. The label lists isolate first, but concentrate could make up a significant portion of the scoop.
Why does this matter? Whey isolate is the purest form of whey protein — it's been filtered to remove almost all lactose, fat, and carbs, leaving ~90% protein by weight. Concentrate is less filtered (70–80% protein) and retains more lactose, fat, and carbs. A blend lets the manufacturer use cheaper concentrate while listing isolate first.
  • Grow: 100% whey protein isolate — one protein source, no blending with cheaper forms. What you see is what you get.
  • ON: "Protein Blend" — isolate, concentrate, and peptides mixed in undisclosed ratios. Impossible to know how much is isolate vs. concentrate.
  • Higher protein per calorie — Grow delivers 25g protein in 110 calories. ON delivers 24g in 120 calories. The difference comes from less fat and carbs.
  • Better for lactose sensitivity — pure isolate has virtually zero lactose. Concentrate retains lactose, which can cause bloating in sensitive users.
What's actually in each scoop
The ingredient list tells you everything. Grow's label is short. ON's label includes artificial sweeteners, soy lecithin, and in some flavors, artificial colors like Yellow 5.

New Zealand grass-fed vs. undisclosed sourcing
Xwerks Grow is sourced exclusively from grass-fed, pasture-raised cows in New Zealand — one of the strictest countries in the world for dairy standards. No rBGH, no antibiotics, no pesticides. Cold micro-filtered and processed acid-free and bleach-free.
ON Gold Standard does not disclose where their whey is sourced. Their label states "no significant difference has been shown between rBST treated and non-rBST treated cows" — which means they cannot confirm their whey is hormone-free.
  • Grow: New Zealand grass-fed — pasture-raised cows, strictest dairy standards globally. No hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides.
  • ON: Source not disclosed — cannot confirm hormone-free status. rBST disclaimer on label.
  • Grow: Cold micro-filtration — preserves native micro fractions (lactoferrin, immunoglobulins). No acid or bleach used in processing.
  • ON: Processing not disclosed — no information on filtration method or processing chemicals.
Stevia vs. artificial sweeteners
Grow is sweetened with stevia — a natural, zero-calorie sweetener from the stevia leaf. No artificial sweeteners, no artificial flavors (except strawberry flavor which uses a small amount), no artificial colors.
ON Gold Standard uses both sucralose and acesulfame potassium (Ace-K) — two artificial sweeteners. Some flavors also contain artificial colors (Yellow 5 in Vanilla Ice Cream, for example). It also contains soy lecithin as an emulsifier.
  • Stevia — plant-derived, zero-calorie, no known adverse effects. Used in Grow across all flavors.
  • Sucralose — artificial sweetener 600x sweeter than sugar. Some research links it to gut microbiome disruption.
  • Acesulfame K — artificial sweetener often paired with sucralose. Contains methylene chloride, a chemical solvent.
  • Soy lecithin — emulsifier derived from soy. Grow is completely soy-free.
  • Yellow 5 — artificial food dye found in some ON flavors. Grow uses zero artificial colors (strawberry uses beet juice for color).
Yes, Grow costs more. Here's why.
ON Gold Standard is cheaper — roughly $1.30 per serving vs. $2.30 for Grow. That's a real difference. But the price reflects what's in the product:
  • 100% isolate costs more than a blend — ON can price lower because concentrate is significantly cheaper than isolate. A "blend" lets them use more of the cheap stuff.
  • NZ grass-fed whey costs more — conventional whey from undisclosed sources is dramatically cheaper than certified grass-fed, pasture-raised New Zealand whey.
  • Stevia costs more than sucralose — artificial sweeteners are a fraction of the cost of natural alternatives.
  • You get what you pay for — more protein per calorie, zero lactose, zero soy, zero artificial sweeteners, zero artificial colors, transparent sourcing. The extra $1 per serving is the gap between premium and mass-market.
