Prolonged inactivity of large muscle groups reduces the muscle contraction that helps clear glucose from the blood, and lab studies show measurably worse post-meal glucose responses during uninterrupted sitting compared with the same time sitting broken up by short activity bouts.
Where the headline oversells it
The framing "exercise can't undo sitting" doesn't survive the larger pooled analyses. Work combining data from very large numbers of participants has found that the mortality risk associated with long sitting hours is strongly moderated by activity level — substantially reduced in the most active groups, to the point of being largely attenuated at high volumes of daily moderate activity.
In other words: activity does offset a great deal of it. The comparison that generates the scary headline is usually between long sitters who barely move and long sitters who move a lot — not between people who train and people who don't.
So why doesn't your workout fully cover it?
The dose is bigger than people assume
The activity levels associated with attenuating the sitting risk in that pooled work are substantial — on the order of an hour or more of moderate activity per day, not a 45-minute lifting session three or four times a week. Most people reading this train hard but are still sedentary in aggregate: a hard hour at 6am followed by nine near-motionless hours is a low-movement day with a spike in it.
Training and daily activity are different variables
Structured training drives fitness, strength, and muscle. Total daily movement drives energy expenditure, glucose handling across the day, joint circulation, and how you feel at 3pm. They overlap but they aren't the same input, and being excellent at one doesn't automatically fix the other.

2. Raise the floor, not just the peak
Daily step count is the simplest proxy for the variable you're missing. Most people who feel "active because I train" are surprised when they measure a workday: it's common to be under 4,000 steps outside of training. Getting the non-training day above 7,000-8,000 changes the aggregate far more than adding a sixth gym session.
3. Add low-intensity volume where it's free
Walking meetings, phone calls on foot, parking further away, stairs by default. None of this is training and none of it needs to be — it's the base of the pyramid, and it's the part a busy schedule quietly deletes first.
• Don't stop training. Exercise remains one of the most robustly supported health behaviours there is. The point is to add movement, not to redistribute it.
• Don't catastrophise about your desk job. The risk here is a modest, population-level association, not an individual verdict. Sitting is not literally comparable to smoking, and researchers in the field have pushed back on that comparison for years.
• Don't buy the gadget first. Standing desks are fine, but standing still isn't the active ingredient — movement and transitions are. A standing desk you never move at solves less than you'd hope.
